What Is a Polyrhythm? 3-Against-4 Explained
A polyrhythm is two rhythms with a different number of evenly-spaced beats, played across the same span of time. The most common starting point — and the one that trips up almost everyone the first time — is 3-against-4: one hand (or voice, or instrument) playing three evenly-spaced hits while another plays four, both finishing together at the start of the next cycle.
Why 3-against-4 is confusing at first
The difficulty is not really about counting; it is that 3 evenly-spaced hits and 4 evenly-spaced hits, laid over the identical span of time, almost never land on the same instant except at the very start and the very end of the cycle. Your ear wants to find a simple relationship between the two patterns, and there isn't one until you find the shared grid both rhythms actually divide evenly.
Finding the shared grid
The smallest number of even subdivisions where both a 3-pulse and a 4-pulse pattern land on whole-number positions is the least common multiple of 3 and 4, which is 12. Divide one full cycle into 12 equal steps: the 3-side lands on steps 0, 4, and 8 (every 12÷3 = 4 steps), and the 4-side lands on steps 0, 3, 6, and 9 (every 12÷4 = 3 steps). The two patterns only coincide at step 0 — everywhere else, they interlock without overlapping, which is exactly the sound that makes a polyrhythm feel rich rather than simply out of sync.
This isn't specific to 3-against-4 — any a-against-b polyrhythm has a shared grid of LCM(a, b) steps, with the a-side landing every grid÷a steps and the b-side landing every grid÷b steps. A polyrhythm generator does exactly this calculation for any ratio you give it, along with the actual millisecond timing of every hit at a given tempo.
The classic verbal trick
A well-known way to internalize 3-against-4 without doing math in your head while playing is to say two phrases with the right syllable count, one per hand, at the same steady pace: "pass the but-ter" fits evenly into three syllables, and "wa-ter-mel-on" fits evenly into four. Saying both phrases together, syllable by syllable, at a steady pace physically demonstrates the interlocking pattern before you ever try to play it on an instrument. Many players find that once the phrase-trick clicks mentally, the physical coordination follows within a few practice sessions.
Practicing it slowly
Start well under any performance tempo — slow enough that you can consciously place each hit rather than relying on feel. Practice each hand's pattern completely alone first until it is perfectly even on its own; a shaky 3-pattern or 4-pattern played alone will only get shakier once you try to combine them. Only once both patterns are solid individually is it worth combining them, and even then, starting at a tempo that feels almost too slow to be musical is normal for the first several attempts.
Beyond 3-against-4
Once 3-against-4 feels natural, other ratios open up a much wider palette: 2-against-3 is a gentler introduction with a shorter 6-step shared grid, while 5-against-3 or 5-against-4 create noticeably more complex, unpredictable-sounding interlocks with longer shared grids. West African drum ensembles, Afro-Cuban rhythm sections, and a great deal of jazz and progressive music all lean on polyrhythms as a core building block rather than an occasional trick, which is a good reason to treat 3-against-4 as a genuine skill worth building rather than a novelty to try once and move past.
The math behind a polyrhythm is exact and fully predictable — it is your hands, ears, and internal sense of time that need the repetition to catch up with what the numbers already say is happening.
