Beat & Tap Tempo Counter

Tap in time with a groove to measure its tempo, and keep track of exactly where you are in the bar as you count along.

Tap the button in time with a beat, at least twice, to estimate the tempo.

Tapping an accurate tempo

The more taps you give it, the more the average smooths out any single mistimed tap — two taps give a single interval with no averaging at all, while eight or ten taps in a steady groove will settle on a stable, repeatable BPM figure. It's the same principle audio software uses when you tap along to a recording to find its tempo before editing.

The bar/beat position underneath is just simple counting: given how many beats have gone by and how many beats make up your measure, it tells you which measure you're in and where in that measure you currently sit — handy for following a chart or confirming your count matches what you're hearing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does tap tempo work?

Each tap records a timestamp. The tool measures the time gap between consecutive taps, averages those gaps, and converts the average back into BPM with 60,000 divided by the average interval in milliseconds — the same method built into most drum machines and DJ software.

Why does it reset after a long pause?

A gap of more than a few seconds almost always means you've stopped and are starting a new tempo, not that the groove genuinely slowed down that much. The counter drops older taps after a long pause so a stray late tap doesn't skew the average of your next attempt.

What does the bar/beat position tell me?

Given how many beats you've tapped and how many beats make up a measure, the counter tells you exactly which measure and which beat within it you're currently on — useful for following along with a chart, cueing a section change, or checking your count against a recording.

Educational tool only. Human tap timing has natural variance — treat the result as a close estimate, not a precise measurement.
